Congratulations Ladies of Orthodox Church

The Managing Committee of the Malankara Orthodox Church that met today (Oct. 19, 2011) has unanimously accepted the constitution revision proposals of the Rule Committee that women of the parish should be given equal right in the parish assembly.  This is the first time women are getting full membership in parish assembly in any of the ancient churches in India. Congratulations! Of course this is only the first step and we have to go two more steps for full participation right. But this is the right step forward and in five years’ time we will have the other two steps too. We have broken the twenty centuries old tradition. This is a revolutionary thing to happen in our Church. Let us thank God. I am giving below the text of the report given by me as the Commission appointed by the Holy Episcopal Synod to study the matter and place proposal. Of course the Synod, the Rule Committee and the Managing Committee made several changes. But this was the basis. I am indebted to the Holy Synod for giving me the opportunity to do some thing like this first in the history of our Church.

Technically this has become the law of the Church. Practically it will become effective when H.H. The Bava Thirumeni issue a Kalpana to this effect, which I am sure will happen in few days time. according to our constitution this amendment can be reversed only by the Association which is a less than one percent possibility.

The report is in ‘god’s own country’ language. Sorry about that (there are 11 pages You can go to for an abridged version of the report in English).

    Dear Thirumeni,

Congratulations on a job done very well!

Your report is highly informative and educational, and it reads more like a thesis than a simple report! One can not, but wonder, as to how much effort you had to put in, in addition to all the research you might have done, to accomplish this. I think that a copy of your report should be distributed to everyone in every one of our churches so that people get a chance to learn about the status of women in our church and society.

It is high time they get the recognition and respect they unquestionably deserve.

Again, congratulations Thirumeni; this is not a small accomplishment.

    Best regards, and prayers

    Your Grace,
Let me congratulate you for this bold step that you have taken. I am sure there will be lot of obstacles to pass in order to bring this recommendation in effect. I hope our Holy Synod and the appropriate committees will act upon this and will be a turning point in the future of our Holy Church.

Congratulations again and praying for you. Hope to see you soon.

    Respected Thirumeni,
Once this takes practical shape, our women folk is entering the main stream of parish administration. Hitherto, they were confined to Sunday School, Divyabodhanam, MOMS, OCYM etc or in other words, with the “spiritual organizations”. If women’s participation in the parish administration can make it more spiritual, it would be a great achievement. After all, women are much more regular in the meaningful participation of the Holy Qurbana in its true sense. Their participation in General Body or Managing Committee meetings can make them more disciplined and hence more purpose oriented. They may also be allowed to read Old Testament on Sundays.

Best wishes in leading our Church towards achieving this feat. Would like to request you to kindly also publish an English version of Your Grace’ report, which can be beneficial for those of us in outside Kerala, who are not well conversant in Malayalam, to learn from Church’s stand on the same.

    With prayers,
    Your spiritual son in Christ

Congratulations to the women of our church!! The uncertainties of the present always give way to the enchanted possibilities of the future. You are destined for greatness. I do not know beneath what sky; Nor on what seas shall be thy fate; I only know it shall be high, I only know it shall be great.

Your Grace, This is very welcomed news, and thank you Thirumeni for your efforts on this front. I firmly feel this is the beginning of great things to come. This is a prime example of how we make change in our church if we make our issues clear to our church leaders and we go through the proper channels. Here’s hoping for continued progress of the Orthodox Church in the world!

Dear and Respected HG Milithios Thirumeni,
The report is defenitely touching all the pros and cons of the issue.
It is my humble opinion that once you have submitted the report to the Synod ,it belongs to the synod. As you have expressed, it has to undergo one more hurdle, the decision of the Association. Untill then it should not have been publicised.

Regarding the approval of the constitutional amendment, it does not have to be approved by the association. It has already come in to effect with the decision of the Managing Committee. Of course the Association can decide that the constitution amendment is invalid, in which case, the amended section will go back to the earlier position.

Thank you Thirumeni for the detailed report – Its indeed an important milestone in the history of Church – I felt that the next two steps should have also been adopted but for the very voiceferous objection from a handful of members that day!

    Your Grace,Congratulations ,
The report is coprehensive, highly informative research thesis. Would like to request you to kindly publish an English version of Your Grace’ report, which can be circulated to those of us in outside Kerala parishes. I think that a copy of your report should be distributed to everyone in our churches so that people get a chance to learn about the status of women in our church and society
We need to amend our parish constitution with out further delay as it was was in violation of the discriminations law in UK and we have been eagerly waiting for a long time for the amendmend of the constitution of the mother church. In our general body meetings women are always present and voice their opinions but they had no voting rights and was a very delicate situation.
Congratulations again and praying for you

    Dear Thirumeni,
No words can express the value of this change in the outlook of the church towards women in terms of their presence in the decision making bodies. Now we hope that the decision can have a positive impact in the functioning of the parishes of our church.
Congrats to you for the efforts put in and seeing it being materialize in the days to come…

    Dear Thirumeni,

Congradulations to Your Grace and all the Ladies of our Church on this historic achievement. We are especially happy about it since an unanimous decision was taken by the G.B.of the St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Toronto in 1999 seeking this and sending the request to our then Metropolitan L.L. H.G.Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios.

Under the initiative of Y.G.,this has been achieved. As the saying goes better late than never.

Next would be to have a written standard Policy and Procedure Manuel for all Diocese and Parishes to adhere and follow.

I look forward to peronally congradulate Y.G. during the visit to conduct the Retreat of our parish-STGIOC, on Nov.5,2011.

You embarked on a journey to make a change which we are sure was no easy task. Your dedication and commitment has finally paid off, Congratulations! Your success has taught us to work hard for what you believe in and to leave the outcome to God. May our Lord be with you in all your future endeavours.

    Thank you Thirumeni.
Also thanks for everyone who supported this change in church policy which was long overdue. Men and women are God’s creation, though created differently with different attributes and roles they were meant to be an asset for each other and to be resourceful to each other. The church is no different and I am so happy for our young ladies who can feel valuable and their voice will be heard in our church.

    With prayers for our church

Congratulations – first to you Thirumeni for making this revolutionary step happen !!!
Its been long awaited since we believe, that despite our “orthodox” label, we the Malankara Orthodox Syrian X’tians are “liberal, progressive, educated, literate, blah..blah…”.
Can’t we now push the fast forward button so that the 2/5 years that you have mentioned is collapsed….. and women quickly take their rightful place.
One might even say that the Indian Parliament is still not ready to reserve 33% seats for women !! But can’t we show that we are progressive ?

Another small issue, as someone has already pointed out – we the literate but illiterate Mallus would definitely be happy if an English translation of the report is also posted.
