Ladies Only!

Thrissur diocese of the Orthodox Church has decided to make it mandatory in all the Churches in the diocese to allow only women to read Old Testament lessons prior to public celebration of the Holy Eucharist. It was decided by the priests’ assembly of the diocese and has been implemented through a Kalpana from the Metropolitan and is in effect now.  Happy Hours our sisters!!

    Thirumeni,

More than the detailed report prepared by Your Grace, this Pastoral Letter for Trichur Diocese is exciting. In fact, it is known that women used to read OT as well as Epistles some 150 years ago at Kuruppumpadi Church. More recently, girls were reading OT and even 2 or 3 Tub Dens at the Bethsada Chapel (Vengola) during the period 1998-99, which I have personally witnessed. But this was later discontinued due to some sort of ‘puritan’ type objections from certain corners. Now we all wish what has started at Trichur get spread to north and south alike.

    Dear Thirumeni,

This is, indeed, a very bold, brave and exemplary step. One could only wish that this practice goes forward without undue hindrances from any quarters. One can only congratulate you for your wise initiative in this regard.

    Prayerfully,
